The theory of p-adic strings is reviewed along with some of their applications , foremost among them to the tachyon condensation problem in string theory. Some open problems are discussed, in particular that of the super-string in 10 dimensions as the end-stage of the 26-dimensional closed bosonic string's tachyon condensation.

In the paper, we show that a large class of II1 factors are singly generated, i.e., generated by two self-adjoint elements. These II1 factors include almost all of the ones whose free entropy dimensions are less than or equal to one.
